Apparently it is now used for AI scams which if not prevented, could cost many organizations and people a lot of money.

A recent post on Facebook has gone viral after a woman shared a harrowing experience involving a sophisticated AI scam that targeted someone she knows. The incident has sparked widespread concern and raised awareness about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence when used maliciously.

According to the post, the woman’s acquaintance received a distressing phone call from someone claiming to be his son. The caller said he had gotten into trouble and needed bail money urgently. To make the situation seem more legitimate, the caller even transferred the man to a real law firm.

“AI can be dangerous!! Someone we know received a call from his son claiming he had gotten in trouble, needed bail, then transferred him to a real law firm too,” the woman wrote in her post. “Thankfully he called the son back and found it to be false.”

The man discovered that the entire call was a hoax, orchestrated using AI technology to clone his son’s voice. This incident highlights the alarming capabilities of AI, which can now mimic voices, create fake videos, and send fabricated messages that appear to be from trusted individuals.

“AI can use your voice, make videos, etc. Please be careful! Warn your family and friends,” the post continued. The woman also emphasized that these AI-driven scams can occur in multiple languages, expanding their reach and making it essential for everyone to stay vigilant.

The post concluded with a crucial piece of advice: “Our friend really thought he was talking to his son!!!! 😳 Use a code word!!!”

Comments started flooding immediately after as Facebook users started sharing their sentiments regarding the AI scam alert:

One user by the name of Olga Johnson attested to the fact that AI is indeed dangerous when used illegally: “Thank you so much for the warning. Not good at all when used irresponsibly! Again, thank you”, she wrote.

“You need to give your family a code name so you will be able to ask them for it”, – Marcella Barnes suggested.

Dany Pham also shared his personal AI scam experience and wrote, ” I got a call from area code 202 today speaking in Vietnamese demanding I must answer questions hahaha.”
